The Basics Of Judo
Posted on March 23rd, 2008 at 10:27 am by flair4change and tagged , , , ,

The martial art style Judo can mean a lot of things to different people.  In reality, it is a fun and exciting sport, an art, a discipline, an activity, a way to protect yourself, and quite simply a way of life.  Although you may hear many different meanings, the word Judo actually means all of the above and several more.

Original founded back in 1882, Judo comes from the feudal Japan fighting system.  Upon founding, Judo was a refinement of the martial art jujutsu.  Jujutsu is one of the oldest martial arts styles, dating back hundreds of years.

Judo made the biggest impact in 1964 when it was first introduced into the Olympic Games.  Now, it is practiced by millions of people all across the world.  Judo can help students stay in shape, excel in all areas of competition, stay protected with self defense, and several other things.  For a majority of students, Judo is practiced just for fun.  Although it starts out as fun for many, it quickly turns into a way of life, a burning passion if you will.

Similar to other martial arts styles, Judo has rules that ensure the safety of those competing in the competitions.   Students of Judo who are looking to test their skills will enjoy the competition levels, which range from club meets to national tournaments, and on up to the well known and best level of competition – the Olympic Games.

Judo is known best for it’s amazing throw techniques.  What many aren’t aware of, is the fact that Judo is more than just throws.  It also involves grappling on the ground, controlling holds, arm locks, leg locks, and even choking techniques.  Judo teaches all aspects of self defense, from a grappler’s standpoint.

Another great thing about Judo is the fact that anyone can study, male or female, and even those that are disabled.  Judo is also inexpensive to participate in, taught throughout the year, and it appeals to everyone.  This martial art is also unique in the sense that even the elderly enjoy practicing it on a daily basis.

Judo also helps students learn and develop respect and self discipline.  It offers the chance to learn self confidence, leadership skills, power, flexibility, and physical prowess.  Judo has evolved quite a bit over the years, going from a fighting art to competition status.  These days, there are separate Judo ranks for kids, adults, and seniors.

The martial art Judo, which means “gentle way” teaches you the applications that you need for self defense as well as competition.  Judo is unlike other martial arts, in the sense that it combines the best of grappling with awesome throws that require little to no strength – but more of the way you position your body.  This is an excellent martial art – that anyone can enjoy.

The Art Of Tai Chi
Posted on March 23rd, 2008 at 10:23 am by flair4change and tagged , , , ,

Tai Chi is an ancient martial art, one that was practiced for centuries in China as an exercise, a martial art, and a way to improve the internal flow of energy in the body.  It emphasis correct form and feeling with each and every movement, which is why it is always taught to be practiced in a slow and gentle fashion.

By involving the entire body with little to no impact, Tai Chi promotes strength, flexibility, and stamina.  With the entire body being taught to move as a whole, Tai Chi cultivates the link among the mind and the body, helping to enhance one’s coordination and balance.  It can also help with the joints as well, especially if an individual is very stiff in the joints.

Although it was developed to be a martial art, it involves very little striking, offensive, or even defense techniques.  Tai Chi is a movement and breathing art that works all of the major muscles and joints in the body, helping to circulate internal energy, or chi.  The Chinese believe that internal energy, or chi is what prevents or stops diseases.

When practicing the art, the body will remain very soft and relaxed, just like it was suspended from the top of the head with the joints being similar to that of a puppet.  The mind of the student is focused on each movement, focusing on the flow of energy.  By being relaxed and focused, you allow the energy to flow through your entire body.

Even though you are soft and relaxed, you are still constantly moving.  The energy that flows through your body never stops, it keeps you moving.  When you move in reality, it takes little to no energy to make a movement.  By using your chi, everything you do seems as if it is weightless.

In combat, the Tai Chi student uses his opponent’s energy against him.  The stylist is very relaxed, believing that the energy of the opponent can be used against him.  There is little to no strength involved.  When the opponent becomes weak and tires himself out – the stylist attacks.  This way, there is very little energy left for defense or even attacking.

Tai Chi is one of the oldest styles of martial arts, and one of the hardest to find these days.  Just like other martial arts, such as Tiger Claw and Ninjutsu, it can be very hard to find a dojo that teaches the art.  If you can find a dojo that teaches the art of Tai Chi, you really shouldn’t pass it up.  It can teach you a lot about internal energy and your spiritual well being – learning more about yourself than you ever thought possible in the process.

Buying An All In One System
Posted on March 20th, 2008 at 5:45 pm by flair4change and

These days, more and more people are turning away
from memberships to gyms and instead choosing to
invest money in a home gym.  You can put a home
gym in a spare corner of your home, or even in the
basement if you wish.  Along with helping you save
money by combining several different types of
equipment into one machine, these types of equipment
can easily fit in small spaces and type up a lot
less weight than their individual counterparts.

When you are considering to buy an all in one piece
of exercise equipment, you should first think
about your goals.  You should consider what you
hope to achieve from exercising and just how well
this piece of equipment will benefit you.

There are several types of all in one equipment for
exercise on the market and almost all of them are
advertised well on television, in magazines, and
on the internet.  The most popular types on the
market are those types that are geared towards
individuals who are interested in lifting weights.

Right now, the two most popular types of all in
one exercise systems are the Bowflex and Total Gym
brands.  The Bowflex system uses resistant bows
that bend instead of the traditional weights that
simply lift.  Bowflex is designed to fit a wide
variety of budgets and needs, it’s widely
adaptable and extremely popular as well.

To make things even better, you can store the
basic Bowflex system in small and tight places,
even under a bed if you choose.  The larger and
more expensive Blowflex system competes with
the types of professional equipment that you can
find in gyms, which allow you a quality workout
on quality equipment.

The Total Gym system is great as well, as it
is advertised by martial arts legend Chuck Norris
and supermodel Christie Brinkley.  It is less
expensive than the Bowflex and uses gravity
and resistance instead of traditional weights.
By using this system, you have the ability to
adapt the machine to a wide variety of exercises
that will work many different areas of your body.

When you make that decision about buying an all
in one exercise system, you must also decide
on price, features, brand, and just who will use
the machine.  If your family plans to use it as
well, then you’ll need to get a system that
everyone will agree on.  You obviously wouldn’t
want a machine that is too complicated for
others in your home.

Even though Bowflex and Total Gym are the 2 most
popular types of all in one equipment, there are
several others out there as will, from brands
such as Weider and many others.  Before you
make your choice, you should look at several
to see which one offers you more for your money.

Alcohol And Exercise
Posted on March 20th, 2008 at 5:43 pm by flair4change and

On Friday afternoon after you leave work, you probably
think about going out and having a few drinks with
friends to relax and wind down.  Even though you
may think you deserve to go out and have a few drinks,
there are some things that you should certainly keep
in mind.

Like any other day, tomorrow is going to be a day
for exercise, and since you are exercising on a
regular basis, a few drinks of alcohol won’t really
hurt anything, right?  Before you decide to rush out
to the local bar, there are a few things below that
you should think about before you make your choice
about going out to drink some alcohol.

Research has proven that even small amounts of
alcohol with increase muscular endurance and the output
of strength, although these types of benefits are
very short lived.  After 20 minutes or so, the
problems will begin to surface.  All of the negative
side effects associated with alcohol will easily
outweigh any possible benefits that it can have.
No matter how you look at it, alcohol is a poison
that can really harm your body if you aren’t careful.

The negative side of alcohol can reduce your
strength, endurance, aerobic capability, recovery
time, ability to metabolize fat, and even your
muscle growth as well.  Alcohol will also have an
effect on your nervous system and brain.  If you
use it long term, you can cause severe deterioration
of your central nervous system.   Even with short
term use, nerve muscle interaction can be reduced
which will result in a loss of strength.

Once alcohol reaches the blood cells, it can and
probably will damage them.  With alcohol users,
inflammation of the muscle cells is a very common
thing.  Over periods of time, some of these cells
that have been damaged can die which will result
in less functional muscle contractions.  Drinking
alcohol will also leave you with more soreness of
your muscles after you exercise, which means that
it will take you a lot longer to recuperate.

Alcohol will also have many different effects on
your heart and circulatory system as well.  When
you drink any type of alcohol, you may begin to
see a reduction in your endurance capabilities.
Anytime you drink, your heat loss will increase,
due to the alcohol simulating your blood vessels
to dilate.  The loss in heat can cause your
muscles to become quite cold, therefore become
slower and weaker during your muscle contractions.

Drinking alcohol can also lead to digestive and
nutrition problems as well.  Alcohol cause a
release of insulin that will increase the metabolism
of glycogen, which spares fat and makes the loss
of fat very hard.  Due to alcohol interfering
with the absorption of several key nutrients, you
can also become anemic and deficient with B type
vitamins.

Because your liver is the organ that detoxifies
alcohol, the more you drink, the harder your liver
has to work.  The extra stress alcohol places on
your liver can cause serious damage and even
destroy some of your liver cells.

Since alcohol is diuretic, drinking large amounts
can put a lot of stress on your kidneys as well.
During diuretic action, the hormones are secreted.
This can lead to heightened water retention and no
one who exercises will want this to happen.

If you must drink alcohol, you should do it in
moderation and never drink before you exercise, as
this will impair your balance, coordination, and
also your judgement.  Think about your health and
how you exercise – and you may begin to look at
things from a whole new prospective.

Effective Cellulite Creams
Posted on March 17th, 2008 at 6:18 pm by flair4change and

Many people around the world experience cellulite. People who suffer from cellulite often search high and low for products that will help them eliminate the cellulite. Cellulite is not a medical condition, as many would believe. Despite the fact that cellulite is not a medical condition, people still want to rid themselves of it because of the fact that it is often unsightly and they feel as if it has an effect on their overall appearance. Cellulite is the process in which fatty tissue accumulates underneath the top layer of the skin. There are many products on the market that are advertised to rid a person of cellulite.

There are many important things that a consumer should consider prior to purchasing products that promise to rid them of cellulite. The first thing that a person should consider is if there have been any complaints against the company that is selling the product. You can easily check this information at the Better Business Bureau. You should also consider if the company offers a guarantee. Many products on the market today are not as effective as they promise, but they tell you that you will definitely see results. If you purchase a product that is supposed to clear up your cellulite issue and it does not, you should be entitled to getting your money back. If you are not permitted to receive your money back, then you should not make the initial investment in the product. The last important factor that you should consider is the actual price of the product. You should not spend an excessive amount on a cellulite product if there is not enough information for you to know that you will achieve the necessary results.

There are many cellulite products on the market today that have proven to be effective in removing cellulite from the body. Some of these effective cellulite products include Avotone Bodysculpt, Revitol Cellulite Solution, and Lip Sculpt Gel. These products have all been tested and proven as effective cellulite products. They have all been noted in having excellent customer service and a return policy that includes the reimbursement of your money.

If you choose not to purchase effective cellulite products, you should consider your other options. If you wish to rid your body of cellulite, you should make sure that you drink plenty of fluids ? particularly water. Water is a great way to purify your body and ensure that you are properly hydrated. You should also maintain a healthy diet. Maintaining a healthy diet will ensure that you are getting the proper nutrients for your body and that all the systems of the body work well and together to make sure that you stay healthy. Getting the right amount of exercise is also very important when it comes to removing cellulite in the body.

New Clues To Breast Cancer Development In High-Risk Women
Posted on March 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pm by flair4change and

NewsRx.com

September 20, 2007

Physicians who treat women with the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 often remove their patients ovaries to eliminate the source of estrogen they believe fuels cancer growth. Yet they also know that anti-estrogen therapies don’t work to treat breast or ovarian cancer that might develop. That paradox has led scientists to question exactly how, or if, estrogen is involved in cancer development and whether removal of ovaries makes sense (see also Breast Cancer).

Now, a team of researchers from Georgetown University s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center have shed light on the mechanism that makes ovary removal protective against tumor development in this unique population. They discovered that estrogen is needed to start the cancer process, but then the BRCA1 mutations somehow render the new tumors unresponsive to estrogen, producing cancer that is more aggressive and difficult to treat.

In a study published electronically on July 23 in the journal Oncogene, Georgetown researchers found that mutations of the BRCA1 gene can cause the estrogen-signaling pathway to go awry after cancer starts to grow. The mutated gene somehow causes the tumor cells to stop expressing the estrogen receptor, a protein that sits on the surface of the cell and recognizes the presence of the hormone. This means that these cancers lose sensitivity to estrogen (and potent anti-estrogen therapies like Tamoxifen) after tumors begin to form.

To show that estrogen was involved in the initiation of the cancer, the researchers overexpressed the estrogen receptor in a laboratory mouse model with a BRCA1 mutation and a p53 gene mutation (the two gene mutations usually coexist in human cancer). As predicted, they found that when exposed to estrogen, these mice developed cancerous tumors.

Estrogen is definitely necessary for these tumors to develop, but somewhere along the tumor development pathway, the emerging tumors lose their sensitivity to estrogen, said Priscilla Furth, MD, the study s senior author and a professor of oncology at Georgetown. The cells that develop into cancers frequently lose their ability to express the estrogen receptor and therefore are not sensitive to anti-estrogen therapies.

Although the molecular mechanisms to explain this loss of sensitivity are not yet clear, the researchers believe that the BRCA1 mutation is causing the estrogen signaling pathway to malfunction, ultimately making these tumors harder to treat.

The findings also explain why the small proportion of women who have had an oophorectomy and still develop breast cancer frequently have tumors that are unresponsive to anti-estrogens like Tamoxifen, said Furth.

Both breast and ovarian cancers are often stimulated by estrogen, so oncologists counsel women who are over the age of 35 and know they carry a BRCA mutation to remove their ovaries the body s major source of estrogen to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer and virtually eliminate risk of ovarian cancer, she explained.

Women with a BRCA1 mutation develop breast cancers that are most often unresponsive to hormones and anti-hormonal therapies like Tamoxifen, said Furth, but doctors continue to see reduced incidence of breast cancer among high-risk women who have undergone the oophorectomy procedure.

The finding that estrogen is important in the development of BRCA1 mutant breast cancers is one of the strongest pieces of evidence to support removing the ovaries to reduce incidence of cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers, said co-author Eliot Rosen, MD, PhD, professor of oncology, biochemistry & cell and molecular biology, and radiation medicine at Georgetown.

The research also explains why oophorectomy appears to be more effective for younger women than older women, he said. This study demonstrates that estrogen is important to the early development of cancer, said Rosen. Women who have lost BRCA1 function need estrogen to generate a tumor, so fewer years of estrogen exposure from the ovaries could be protective against the generation of new tumors.

BRCA serves as a DNA repair molecule throughout the body, fixing cellular processes that have malfunctioned for some reason, said Furth. But once BRCA is damaged or mutated, these repair processes are slowed or stalled, which can set off a chain reaction resulting in cancer, as demonstrated in their laboratory model.

The reason why BRCA mutations are so potent for causing breast cancer is because of the multiple actions it can cause, said Furth. Loss of BRCA function interferes with DNA repair and, as shown in this study, it appears to enhance to growth effects of estrogen.

The team s research might also reveal why pregnancy does not appear to be as protective against the development of breast cancer in this population as it does in women without genetic mutations. In non-inherited breast cancers, early pregnancy and multiple pregnancies appear to be protective against breast cancer development, explained Rosen.

But for women who have inherited BRCA1 mutations, the situation is the opposite early and multiple pregnancies seems to accelerate the development of breast cancer, he said. We can now speculate that the higher levels of estrogen and other hormones during pregnancy stimulate the early stages of cancer development.

The researchers intend to build upon their findings in future studies, investigating what is happening in the very early stages of cancer development and figuring out how tumor cells can become estrogen receptor negative. Furth and Peter Shields, MD, professor of oncology and medicine at Georgetown and the associate director for Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, recently received a two-year, $776,000 grant from the Department of Defense to study the role of another protein, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), believed to be involved in the development of BRCA1-deficient breast cancer.

Ideal Toothbrushes for People who Wear Braces
Posted on February 3rd, 2008 at 7:12 pm by flair4change and

Everyone wants to have a beautiful smile. Unfortunately not everyone has their teeth grow in perfectly straight, creating that to die for smile. For those individuals who have an imperfect alignment of their teeth and are required to get braces there also comes the added frustration of keeping the braces clean.

If you have never had braces, then it is probably hard for you to comprehend how frustrating it is to keep your teeth and braces clean. Absolutely everything that you put in your mouth will want to speak to your braces, as cruel as it is, there seems to be no exception to this rule.

Not only do those who have had braces installed on their teeth have to put up with the initial discomfort of the breaking in phase, they also find themselves having to pull double duty when it comes to brushing their teeth. Not only does food gets stuck between the teeth but it also gets stuck between the nooks and crannies of the braces themselves. These extra food particles must be extricated for proper oral hygiene.

Brushing your teeth with a regular toothbrush when you have braces is probably not going to give you the results that you desire. Instead people with braces need to use specialty toothbrushes which are made for the specific purpose of getting food and other debris from between the teeth and braces.

One such toothbrush which works really well is the orthodontic toothbrush which is made by Oral B. this brush comes with specially made bristles which are aligned into a ?V? shape. This allows the orthodontic toothbrush to get into places that an ordinary flat brush simply cannot reach. It is also very good at removing plaque which has a tendency to cling to the wire of the braces.

Ortho Pro also makes a special orthodontic toothbrush which can be used by either kids or adults. These brushes are made with a groove in them which is shaped like a V. the handle of the Ortho Pro is also made so that the head is held at an angle which makes it much easier to reach behind the teeth and get to those hard-to-reach areas.

You can also find another product made by Ortho which is called the Ortho Ready Brush. This toothbrush is unique in the fact that it comes with its own powdered toothpaste within the bristles. These toothbrushes of course are mainly intended for travel and for when you are out and about and need to brush your teeth after eating. These toothbrushes are really easy to use all you have to do is wait the bristles and brush your teeth. The Ortho Ready Brush is of course disposable.

How To Maximize Your Aerobics Workout
Posted on February 3rd, 2008 at 7:07 pm by flair4change and

Everyone knows how important working out is. However, not everyone knows the proper way to exercise and maximize the benefits of aerobics and a good aerobics workout. With a few simple steps, you can easily make the most of your aerobic workout.

One of the first steps in maximizing the benefits of aerobics is to understand why you need to work out. Probably the first thing that comes to mind is weight control. However, working out not only helps you lose weight, it is also good for your overall health.

Aerobics has a tendency to relax your muscles; therefore, relieving you of stress. Research has also shown that regularly exercising increases the production of endorphins. A good cardio workout can strengthen your heart, while reducing your risks of developing diabetes.

Now that you know some of the benefits of aerobics, it is important to know how to properly workout. Start by working out at the same time each day, totaling at least 2 hours a week. Setting a routine will help make your aerobic workout more of a habit than a chore. The more you work out, the easier it will be to actually work out.

In order to create total body fitness, you will need to incorporate both aerobics and strength training. In order to burn more calories, you need to build up your muscles. It takes less energy to move fat.

When first starting out, try to get in three workouts a week. Start with a short warm up, generally lasting 5-10 minutes. Follow the warm up with a strength training routine. Then, go into some more light aerobics for approximately 20 minutes. It is important to be careful to not overdo it when you start, since your motivation levels will be low. You definitely want to avoid muscle strains!

A Guide To Skin Cancer
Posted on February 3rd, 2008 at 7:04 pm by flair4change and

The mere mention of the word cancer is enough to make anyone hyperventilate. There are, of course, different types of cancer. In this article, we take a look at skin cancer.

When sitting in a doctor’s office, one always tends to get the feeling any news will be bad news. Imagine sitting there and having your doctor tell you that you have cancer.

What would your reaction be to such news. Panic? Shock? What would it mean to your life, your family, your friends if you found out you had cancer. What if it is terminal?

A diagnosis of cancer carries a certain lotto factor. Getting cancer is bad enough, but the type of cancer is critical to your ultimate outcome. Fortunately, skin cancer is both treatable and preventable.

So, just what are we talking about when we say skin cancer? In the most basic terms, it is an unnatural growth in the layers of the skin. The growth typically occurs in the epidermis.

As you can probably guess, skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. The exposure can be for short periods that result in burns, but they can also be for exposure over long periods of time. Having a good tan has not been shown to make a difference.

Cancerous skin growth is actually a catch all phrase. This particular cancer breaks down into three different types with each having its own outcome.

When it comes to this type of cancer, there is serious and less serious diagnosis. Malignant melanoma is the worst. It is fatal if not treated early, but is the rarest form diagnosed.

Basal cell skin cancer, on the other hand, is the most frequently seen skin cancer. It is rarely fatal. Oddly, it can also be hereditary. If you family has a history of it, get checked out.

Squamous cell can be a nasty form of skin cancer, but it can also be caused by things other than the sun. It is found on both the skin and internal organs. The skin version is treatable, but it can spread and be deadly

There is a really sad thing about people with bad skin cancer. The ugly truth is they could have done something about it. You see, skin cancer is prevented pretty easily.

Laziness. It is the biggest factor in skin cancer episodes. Skin cancer is a result of exposure to the sun. If you take the steps to limit the damage of that exposure, you can cut your risk of skin cancer to next to nothing.

Am I suggesting you stay inside all the time? Of course, not. Just wear sun block to protect your fragile skin. If you are balding, throw a hat on. Nothing is worse than skin cancer on the noggin.

Skin Cancer Types
Posted on February 3rd, 2008 at 7:02 pm by flair4change and

The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.

The term “skin cancer” refers to three different conditions. From the least to the most dangerous, they are:

  • basal cell carcinoma (or basal cell carcinoma epithelioma)
  • squamous cell carcinoma
  • melanoma

The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Together, these two are also referred to as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is generally the most serious form of skin cancer because it tends to spread (metastasize) throughout the body quickly.

Another, much less common, type of skin cancer is called malignant melanoma. About 7,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year. Melanoma behaves differently to basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.
